California Dreamin'

I don't normally write blogs about our visits to California since most of my time is spent doing everyday kinds of things with my parents, family and friends.  I'm not a tourist.  HOWEVER, there are plenty of very interesting and beautiful things to see and do in the area.

Miles and I visited my brother and sister-in-law for the weekend in Aptos and we stopped in  Santa Cruz, a coastal city that has a very proud surfing history which dates back to the 1880's.

There's also a beach boardwalk which boasts that it's California's oldest surviving amusement park dating from 1907.

It's very quiet (but still partially open) in Dec., and Miles and I strolled the boardwalk.  Going to the Santa Cruz boardwalk is one of my fondest childhood memories and the scene of Miles' and my 2nd date way back in 1981.  Hasn't changed much (and neither have we).

San Mateo has some very pretty nature areas.  One of our favorites is Sawyer Camp Trail which runs about 6 miles along the Crystal Springs Reservoir.

The trail is usually very crowded on weekends with bike riders, walkers, joggers, etc.  Lucky us!  When we went on a late Sat. afternoon, we saw very few people and only pretty views and deer.

Miles and I met up with good friends Marcos and Maxine Eisenberg in Oakland.  Marcos and I have know each other since before we were born--our parents have been friends since the mid 1940's.  We took a trip down memory lane and had ice cream at Fenton's Creamery, an Oakland landmark since the 1920's.  The last time Miles and I were there was sometime in the mid-70's when we were students at U.C. Berkeley.  (We never went there together since we didn't meet until 1980).  And it is still terrific! Fenton's original creation of toasted almond ice cream...ah...

Marcos then took us on a tour around Oakland and we saw beautiful public art.   We were particularly impressed with these statues of humanitarian figures.

Our last stop on the "tour" was to Lake Merritt in Oakland.
