Adam, Dana and LEO (fun being active grandparents)!

We had a magical 12-day visit with Adam, Dana and Leo (2 years 3 months).

First stop, the Natural History Museum at ETH.

In the middle of this visit, Adam and Dana took the train to Milan (Adam had meetings plus a vacation with Dana) while we babysat for 3 days.  Fortunately, Leo survived his grandparents.  It only got a little rough when Leo would wake up at night crying for his mother.  The only thing that would quiet him was to lay down with him in his mother's bed.  Whatever works!

While we had Leo all to ourselves, we took him to the Rapperswil Children's Zoo.  We went by train (about a 1/2 hour away south along Lake Zurich).   Leo just loves animals!

The next day we went to the Zurich Zoo.  More wonderful animals!

When Dana and Adam returned, we all spent the day at Jucker Farm.  Not only is it the host of the largest pumpkin exhibition in Switzerland,  but they also have a petting zoo, hay bales to climb on, wheelbarrow rides, machines that produce fresh apple juice and a restaurant featuring locally grown products. Top that all off with a magnificent view of Lake Pfaffiker, the mountains and pristine weather, it was an ideal day for all of us.

I just loved the animal statues made of pumpkins.

On our last day together, we enjoyed Butler Brunch.  Friends of ours had given this to us as a gift and a boxed brunch was delivered to our apt.


 Butler Brunch:  fresh rolls/croissants, champagne, orange juice, muesli, yogurt, fresh fruit, cheese, deli meat--YUM!!!

We then took a walk in Zurichberg, a neighborhood/forest area overlooking the city.  It was a unusually warm day and the color of the trees was spectacular.

    LUCKY LEO! Grandparenthood is the best. It only gets better! What a special time it must have been. Lovely that Adam and Dana could get away as well.

We really are the luckiest people in the world!  The sabbaticals take us to so many wonderful places and even though we were in Paris a mere 3 years ago, we are loving it all over again. Our apt. is conveniently located in the north Marais near Place de la Republique where all the Paris demonstrations are held.  Our building is quite old, but the small and cozy one-bedroom apartment, is newly renovated.  The neighborhood is in the process of gentrifying with many new galleries and restaurants. Our dear friends Marcel and Jessa once again invited us to join them on another adventure.  We went to prospect for gold, just like the '49ers in California! There are no active mines here at the moment but there is a small amount of gold being prospected in the rivers and streams around Switzerland.  We drove to a site in the Lucerne canton called Doppleschwand where we met our guide, Damian.    Damian (left), 2 other prospectors, Jessa, Marcel and me Equipped with wading boots, shovels and gold mining pans, we walked to the stream and learned how to placer mine.  This is a technique where you fill your pan with a shovel full of sand and rocks and then swirl the pan, first extracting the rocks.  You keep dipping the pan with water, shake and swirl over and over, extracting pebbles until you have just a fine layer of sand at the bottom of the pan.  Then very carefully you look for tiny (and I mean TINY) specks of gold th...

Art, Architecture and a French Recipe

It is really an understatement to say Paris is all about art.  There are too many museums to count, neighborhoods with varied architecture, galleries, public art dotted around the city...the list goes on and on. Miles and I had the opportunity to visit my friend Ilaria Tonti who works in a small boutique that sells hand-made rugs.  She invited us to the opening of an artist's newest handmade rug (seen below).
